Where should custody exchanges occur?

On Behalf of | Nov 17, 2025 | Child Custody |

One of the reasons that sharing custody is so challenging for separated parents is that they must continue to see each other regularly. Despite the end of their relationship, they have an obligation to interact multiple times a week as they exchange custody of their children.

Each of those exchanges is potentially an opportunity for conflict. In fact, the exchange process itself might potentially lead to disputes between parents. They may argue over where the custody exchange should occur.

What locations are appropriate for custody exchanges?

Every family has unique needs

There is no single set rule for setting the location of a custody exchange. Instead, parents usually establish those terms on their own or ask a judge to set them based on family circumstances.

Frequently, the exchange occurs at the front door of one parent’s home. The parent with less parenting time is often the adult who travels to pick up and drop off the children. Such arrangements are beneficial in cases where one parent is habitually late or when the parents live near each other.

Other times, parents might agree to pick up the children at the other parent’s house, thereby splitting the travel obligations. In high-conflict scenarios, parents might agree to meet at a neutral location. In fact, they might even exchange custody in the parking lot of the local police department for safety’s sake.

Creating custody arrangements that prioritize calm interactions and ensure everyone’s safety is of the utmost importance. Parents may need assistance learning about their rights and their options under the law when they need to create or modify a child custody order, and that’s okay.
