What can you do to improve communication with your co-parent?

When you go through a divorce, you and your ex have several options to choose from when it comes to raising the children. One of these options is to co-parent, which means that you will need to be able to communicate effectively. Making that happen isn’t always easy, partially because you may have to deal with contentious matters.

It’s critical that you and your ex find ways to communicate suitably, because the way you interact can affect your child’s stability, ability to thrive and security. These tips may help you to improve communication.

Remain clear and consistent

Parenting plans often involve detailed schedules. Being able to communicate clearly about things like pick-up time, school events and extracurricular activities can reduce confusion. Finding simplified ways to do this may be beneficial. Consider emails, texts and shared calendars to make this easier for everyone involved.

Set the plan for contentious conversations

Having a disagreement can quickly derail even the most productive conversation. Having a plan for handling those situations before they occur may help to ensure it’s addressed properly and quickly. Once tensions rise, it’s best to take time to cool down before responding. When either parent says that they need time to cool down, set a time to come back to discuss the matter. Active listening and compromise are important.

Keep the focus on the child’s needs

It’s important to keep conversations focused on the matters that are important. All of the discussions between you and your ex should center on what’s best for the children. This should be done using neutral language and calm tones. In some cases, it may help to be almost businesslike.

Any terms that you and your ex set for communication should be written in the parenting plan. This ensures that either parent can go back to review what’s required. Getting the parenting plan set can be difficult, so it may be beneficial to work with someone who’s familiar with these matters.
